Before the IDC

Pre-requisites

In order to enrol on the Instructor Development Course you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Have at least 60 logged dives for the IDC or 100 logged dives for the Instructor Exam
  • Have logged experience of night, deep and navigation dives
  • Have PADI Divemaster certification or equivalent*
  • Have medical clearance signed by a physician (not the applicant) within the last 12 months
  • Be an Emergency First Response Instructor (most candidates will not have this, so training immediately follows the IDC – see During the IDC)
  • Have paid the current registration fee and examination fee to PADI Europe (see Prices for details)

*Please contact us if you have trained with another organisation and wish to make the crossover to PADI, so that we can advise your entry level.

Materials for the IDC

Study materials:

You must have the PADI Guide to Teaching (70513) before you arrive so that you can complete the instructor development section. Additionally you must also make sure you have with you throughout the IDC and the IE the following, which can be purchased upon arrival at the dive centre:

  • PADI Instructor manual 2010 (70120)
  • Confined Water cue cards (60194)
  • Open Water cue cards (60202)
  • Confined Water lesson preparation slate (69573)
  • Open Water diver lesson planning slate (60571)
  • eRDP ML (70031)

The 2010 Instructor Manual should be downloaded (free to PADI members) from the PADI website.

A full list of required materials for candidates can be found on the Prices & Materials page. While it is not necessary for you to bring all of these with you to the IDC it is important that you own them for the sake of your professional career.

Kit:

Most candidates prefer to use their own dive kit but if you do not wish to travel with yours we can rent it to you for 25 euros per day. Kit must include a lamp, knife, 2 blank underwater slates and a watch or dive computer.

Classroom:

Desk materials will be provided (notepad, pen, highlighter, calculator etc.) Candidates should bring their own laptop computer to be able to make use of digital training materials. Power points are available at every desk, and internet access is free.

Preparation before you arrive for the IDC

  • You should be familiar with everything that you learned in the Divemaster course, so if you are feeling a little unsure about this, it’s important to go over this before you arrive. Revision of this material is not part of the IDC, but knowledge of this material is essential.
  • You must complete the Instructor Development section of the Guide to Teaching included in your IDC Crew Pack BEFORE THE IDC.

Pre-requisites for EFRI

In order to complete Emergency First Response Instructor training you must have a current (less than 2 years old) EFR provider certification, including Care for Children. Don’t worry if you don’t have this – it can be undertaken at Aqua-Marina Oxygen just before your IDC begins.

Materials for the EFRI

You will need the EFRI start up kit (60215) which you can purchase at the dive centre.
